Advocacy
The Land Park Community Association was founded more than 20 years ago in response to an ambitious proposal by zoo officials to take over much of William Land Park. Since that time, the association has worked to bring neighbors together to study issues and present a voice for the neighborhood, advocating to maintain historic street lights, establish and follow clear and consistent policies for the placement of cell towers, engage regional and city leaders on the need for added river crossings, work with Sacramento Police Department to share neighborhood public safety concerns and many other issues.
The association is presently working on three important issues:
The Sacramento River Crossing: The cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento engaged regional stakeholders, including representatives from the Land Park Community Association, to study the need for added crossings (vehicular, mass transit, pedestrian) over the Sacramento River. The association hosted several neighborhood meetings on the topic, surveyed residents and distributed information through the LPCA newsletter. More information on the river crossing can be found here.
Proposed Expansion of the Sacramento Zoo: Last year, zoo officials received city money to study the feasibility of eventually moving the zoo to the former city dump – Sutter Landing. The zoo’s consultant quickly came to the conclusion that Sutter’s Landing was not a feasible alternative and attention was turned to a massive expansion into William Land Park. The Land Park Community Association engaged neighbors, zoo officials and city leaders to refocus attention to what can be done to improve the zoo’s operation within its existing boundaries. The association continues to work cooperatively with stakeholders. For more information, click here.
Northwest Land Park Development: Located near Third and Broadway on the Setzer Forest Property, the Northwest Land Park Development is a proposal to redevelop the property into a residential neighborhood with limited commercial space. The association has worked with the proposal’s developer to ensure the eventual project keeps in the architectural integrity, open space and walkability of our neighborhood. More information can be found here.
